A Socialization Swim, Gym and Art Program for Kids with LD, ADHD & Mild Autism
This swim, gym and art program is for children aged 6-16 who need a caring environment where they can socialize with peers and develop self-confidence. It is particularly helpful for children with LD and/or ADHD, mild autism and those who lack fine or gross motor coordination skills.
A service of the Montreal Centre for Learning Disabilities, the program is offered weekly on Friday evenings from 6:00 p.m.to 8:15 p.m. Each session runs for ten weeks. There is a much anticipated party at the end of each session. Maximum participants per session are limited to 28 to ensure each child has individualized attention.
One of the program’s primary goals is to have positive social interaction. Children are divided into two age groups for the art and gym sessions. Each session lasts approximately 35 minutes. The pool activities include 1/2 hour of structured activities and 15 minutes of supervised fun and water games. In addition to our volunteers the Hampton Y also offers the services of their lifeguards at all times. Each week the kids’ artistic talents are encouraged to flourish by offering a variety of arts and crafts. Our goal is to improve fine motor skills, hand -eye coordination and to increase attention span. Social interaction between peers and counsellors is promoted, as well as just having fun!
Part of the success of AQUA K.I.D.S is the “one on one” attention from our many volunteers, who under the leadership of our program director Christopher Simeone, ensure structure and a caring environment for our kids. Several of our volunteer counsellors are university students from Concordia, McGill, as well as students from Vanier College. We also have volunteer students from Loyola High School and Royal West Academy. Counsellors are assigned to a participant and move with them through each activity.
